What is the best built air rifle?
I'm Canadian and a gun is too hard to get legally. I don't want to be on a registry anyway. What is the best built air rifle I can legally carry without fac or some other license?
|
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
Well, I don't know the laws in Canada, but I can tell you that I like my XS-B22. It's an inexpensive Chinese made rifle, but it's accurate and hits hard, although it is heavy. My MIL has a B18(19?), also in .22. It's a good bit lighter, but doesn't has the same velocity. Still good for killing squirrels, rabbits, etc. These aren't "the best", but are among the best value out there.
But I thought that long guns were pretty available in Canada? I know handguns are fairly regulated, but I was under the impression that rifles were easy to own. |

benjamin sheridan air rifles....i like them because they are well made (when you pick one up and shoulder it, you will know what i mean) and i like the pump action, no co2 stuf, less to go wrong....................
and they are quieter than a co2 and with the pump, one has options as to the power of the shot.... .............had one as a kid and i could tear up a rabbit, squirrel, or birds which were my favorite............. |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
I had a benjamin/sheridan as a kid, AWESOME air rifle. The new barrel break pellet rifles shoot with more FPS though, but the pump action has less to go wrong I think.
They are really well built though and feel like a real rifle not a toy |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
Winchester 1000FPS tears em up! This is the one I have. It's break barrel, comes with a 4x scope (pretty nice quality too) and usually for just under $100, in my opinion can't be beat.

I bought an old German Hy-Score .177 once at an antique show for 40$. I`ve heard RWS makes some awesome airguns, get a 22 at 1000 ft/sec which can make some damage. |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
It is reported in the media that the gun registry is a "shopping list" for criminals looking for guns in Canada.

You might as well get a license to own a real gun. Handguns are just as easy to get licensing for as regular guns. You do have to pass a written/practical test to get the license for either type of gun, but its not too hard if you pick up the government information manuals. The tester told me the only automatic fail is if you point the barrel at him:) I don't care for the registry, and it really isn't enforced in the western provinces. I doubt criminals are looking at the registry to see who to rob for their guns. They might get shot. An air rifle is pretty much useless anyway for hunting/defence, especially at less than 500fps, unless you are shooting gophers or squirrels, and even some of them will spit the pellet back at you. |

Re: What is the best built air rifle?
Another vote for RWS, but there are other Euro airguns that may be of higher quality, but I don't know who they are. I do know that you can spend a lot of money on an air rifle! Nothing wrong with the Beeman and Gamo air rifles. I have a middle-of-the-road Gamo that I'm very happy with.

Re: What is the best built air rifle?
RWS Diana model 52 in .22 is a really nice, hard-hitting springer.

Re: What is the best built air rifle?
I shoot a Gamo Hunter 220. It's .177 caliber, 1000fps, accurate, and will put squirrels, rabbits in the pan. It's grooved to accept standard 22 rifle type scope mounts but not necessary IMHO.

Re: What is the best built air rifle?
A lot depends on whether youre going to be shooting varmints or punching nice circular holes in targets. You dont want to carry a match quality air rifle in the field and you sure dont want to try and keep pace in a match using a sporting quality rifle. If youre looking for Olympic match quality, without question, Feinwerkbau makes some of the most well made and well respected air rifles in the world. Their 300S model (older and discontinued) is arguably the best match air rifle ever made, yes EVER. Today's match rifles require compressed air or C02, the 300S is an old spring piston power house. It is also a war horse, you can run hundreds of thousands of rounds through it before it will need new seals. Diana and Steyr both make excellent match quality air rifles as well, however I am not nearly as familiar with them. Please remember, we're talking Olympic match quality air rifles here so they are quite expensive, thousands of dollars. If youre looking for a sporter, something to carry out on the farm, along the brush line, creek-side, etc I would suggest something from the Beeman R series. Their R1 model is extremely powerful and, for a sporter, very accurate. Personally, I dont know that I would buy anything in their G series. Seems to be lesser quality (not horrible) still better than 85 to 90% of the rest of the competition. Weihrauch and RWS make a good sporting quality air rifle as well. But even these air rifles will run several hundred dollars and if you want a good quality scope mounted on them you can end up pushing nearly a grand. If youre looking for a $100 to $200 air rifle to knock around with and toss in the back of the pick up truck, and accuracy isnt a top priority then just about any of the ones you can grab off the shelf at Wal-Mart should do - I would assume that they would all be of about the same quality. I dont want to come across as an air rifle snob, that REALLY isnt my intention, and believe me, I am NOT that qualified to dictate anything to you, but just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. The $200 rifle simply wont last.
If you can afford to dole out around $750 to $800 and you clean and maintain the thing, occasionally have a qualified air rifle gunsmith check it over it will last you a lifetime and you'll be able to hand it down to your kids. Try looking at gunbroker and auctionarms websites. You can find used but VERY well maintained older quality name air rifles for sale or auction there. And by the way, another GIMMER posted "You need to register an air rifle in Canada if it shoots over 500 feet per second." I am not familiar with Canadian law, but if that is the case then his follow up statement "Pretty much limits you to the crappiest air rifles" is extremely accurate. Hope this is helpful. |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
I don't know what's available in Canada.
Two pretty nice brands are RWS (the upper-end guns) and Hermann Weirauch. They both have British non-FAC versions, so you might look into them. Prices are ~$450+ USD. I don't quite understand the bit about "carrying it around" however. Any airgun that only shoots regular pellets isn't going to be much of a threat to any human--especially an airgun that shoots under 500FPS. -end- |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
Can a .22 airgun at 1000 ft/sec significantly damage a human at least wearing light clothes and at close ranges? I`m hoping it can but please those who are experts let me know what you think. I know next to zero about any guns, I`m from NYC.

There have been a few instances of kids being killed from wounds they received from being shot with BB and pellet guns. The last couple I recall, one was shot in the side of the head, and the other was shot in the spine, from behind. Both developed infections which killed them in a couple days. Probably not though. A .22 pellet gun at 1000 FPS has around 22ft-lbs of energy. A 22LR bullet at ~1100 fps has around 120 ft-lbs of energy. -end- |
Re: What is the best built air rifle?
IMHO if you shoot a bad guy in the face at close range with a powerful air pistol you can at least have a chance of scarying him away or slowing him down but a 250+ lumens flashlight does a much better job,no permanent injuries and is perfectly legal. The idea of cutting to pieces a blind bad guy appeals to me a lot. In NYC we are limited to lights and quietly carrying blades.

Quality aint cheap!
The Beeman R-9 .20 http://www.straightshooters.com/beem...oublegold.html is good all around. It dont matter about velocity if ya cant hit. I take squirrels at 40 yds in the ear. For plinking and deadly accuracy...http://www.straightshooters.com/beeman/r7standard.html At 20 yds this gun can make 10 shots and 1 hole. Sweet and nimble! Tactically the Air Arms Talon is cool...link.... http://www.straightshooters.com/air%...e/talonss.html Attachment 85900 |
